“Tuned In” to Band Literacy

The Goddard Education Foundation donors are “Tuned In” to providing over 6,200 Goddard Public Schools students with innovative educational experiences.

The “Tuned In” To Band Literacy program for bands at both the Goddard Middle School and High School levels will provide an innovative performance curriculum for all 7th-12th grade students. “Traditionally, students in band have relied on director’s instruction in a teacher-centered learning environment to gain musical skills only needed to perform teacher-selected repertoire. We believe, this curriculum can help provide the tools for our over 138 students in middle and high school bands to become more self-sufficient and student-centered musicians, who are lifelong learners of music and the arts”, Mrs. Pfeifer, Goddard Band Teacher expressed.

Not only does this curriculum help students become independent players but will also contribute to the balance, blend, expression, intonation, tone quality, and technicality in festival performances, something all students look forward to competing in. Riley Jabara, an 8th Grade student and Bassoon player at GMS said, “We are working better at hearing each other, balancing with each other. I can already feel improvements and it's just the beginning.” When asked what Riley hopes to accomplish with this curriculum, she shared that she wants to continue taking her music skills to the next level and someday, would like to end up teaching band at this level, like Mrs. Pfeifer.
